William Goldman will speak on International Devlopment Assistance in Public Health
Goldman will talk about his life and work overseas. He will give an overview of international development assistance and the role of USAID; a more detailed description of the politics, scope, content, purpose and functions of USAID's international public health assistance; specific examples of successful programs, especially for family planning and oral rehydration; an overview of the impact of assistance on family planning and infant and child health; and his views on the future of USAID and development assistance.
Bill Goldman grew up in Michigan and Ohio, and met his wife at and graduated in mathematics from Case Western in 1967. They were Peace Corps Volunteers in Tonga in 1970-71 and spent the year 1972 backpacking around Asia. Bill studied for an MSc in Demography at the London School of Economics in 1974-75. He joined the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) as a foreign service officer in 1976, where he worked for 25 years. During this time he worked and lived with his family in the Philippines, Ecuador, Bangladesh, India and Jordan managing international assistance for reproductive health, population, child survival, HIV/AIDS, infectious diseases, and related public health programs. After retirement from the government Bill worked in international public health for private companies in the Philippines and Moldova. He and his wife moved back to Cleveland last year after 43 years (30 abroad) in order to be near their baby granddaughter.

Barbara Green will speak on her recent travels to Cuba
Barbara B. Green is Professor Emeritus of Political Science, Cleveland State University. She holds an A.B. from Wellesley College and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University. She has taught at CSU since 1968 and served as Vice Provost for nine years followed by a year as Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs. Her fields of expertise include the politics and economics of the Soviet Union, Russia, and Eastern Europe.

Dr. Masahiro Morikawa will speak on Saving Mothers, Saving Children: Global Perspectives
Dr. Morikawa is a Japanese trauma surgeon who came to the United States in 1991 on a Japanese government scholarship to obtain a public health degree at Johns Hopkins University. During his studies, he realized that he needed comprehensive primary care training to better serve global health issues and he decided to do a family medicine residency here at Case Western Reserve University. After his training, he joined the Department of Family Medicine at CWRU, directing the global health track for the family medicine residency training. Morikawa is also the director of family medicine inpatient service, splitting his time on the floor and in the clinic. He also spends two to three months per year overseas on global health work.
